Most of us love the place we live and have its best interests at heart. We want our town/city and the people who live there to thrive. But is this reflected in our buying choices?
Where we choose to spend our money can have a bigger impact on our communities than we might think. Buying from a small, local business can have a beneficial impact reaching far beyond our own shopping experience:
It Improves the Local Economy
When you buy something from a large chain store, most of that money is taken out of the local economy. It gets sent here, there, and everywhere to pay international suppliers and various other people. Studies show that as little as 43% of the money from the purchase of goods at a large retailer says in the local economy. In contrast, 68% of the money spent with small/medium-sized businesses is returned to the local economy. That’s a whopping 25% difference! This is because they tend to employ people from the area and are more likely to use local suppliers.
Buying from small businesses encourages and enables them to grow. In turn, this creates more local jobs, and a community with a thriving business community and plenty of employment opportunities is a big draw for homebuyers. Potentially, buying from small businesses in your local area could increase the value of your home. How crazy is that?
It Creates a Sense of Community and Upholds Local Values
It makes sense to say that the people who live and work in your area are more likely to care about similar things to you. There’s a good chance they share the same concerns for things like local schools and small charities in the area. They care about the community because they’re a part of it. Can the same be said of the owners of large chains? In most cases, no.
Doing business with small, local traders is a great way to get to know your neighbours. You get the small perks of personalised service and genuine conversation as well as the wider benefits we’ve mentioned previously. You could even meet your new best friend!
It’s Better for the Environment
Reducing our impact on the environment is a responsibility that more and more people are committing to every day. We’re more aware than ever of the environmental impact of our purchases. We all want to live in a way which is sustainable.
Buying locally is one way we can all help. The less miles goods cover between manufacture and buyer, the better. By using a local business, you don’t just help your community, you benefit the environment too.
