We’re proud to announce the launch of a brand new website for The United Benefice of Dolphinholme, Quernmore & Over Wyresdale (DQOW Benefice). The churches approached us with an unfinished Wix site, looking to increase their online presence, engage the wider community and give a voice to younger members of the benefice.
When we begin designing a website for a client, we like to inject the personality of the individual, business or community and include that in the layout or colour scheme, however we could tell that this project would be very different from day one. Here, we were working with three very separate rural communities with different personalities, but we needed to come up with a cohesive design for this website.
We decided to think about what the communities had in common, and once we focused on the blue sky and rolling green hills, everything started to come together. We focused on the same aspects in their new, hand-drawn logo too; bringing the churches together and adding an element of cheekiness to show how unique the benefice is.
The United Benefice of Dolphinholme, Quernmore & Over Wyresdale is made up of three churches on the edge of the Trough of Bowland who share the same vicar and join together in a service on the 5th Sunday of every month (when there is one). Rev. Cindy Rigney, the vicar of the benefice, told us how important it is to her that churches offer something culturally significant, so we’ve really focused on the non-traditional aspects of the churches with this new website.
An events calendar was particularly important to the benefice, as they host regular groups and events that are open to the wider community. Cindy told us,
We’re in such a rural setting here. It’s not difficult to see how individuals can feel isolated, so we needed a way to reach out and really show that we’re here for the community, whether they’re regular church-goers or not.
This events calendar allows website visitors to export the details from each event to their own iCal or Google Calendar, something savvy users have been used to for a while now, and it’s been proven to increase footfall. We loved the calendar so much that we’ve integrated one into our website too!

Cindy, Vision Champion Jackie and website administrator Graham all attended a training session prior to the launch of the website. They were taught how to alter images, add new events and write new blogs, and they’re having plenty of fun getting to grips with WordPress! Jackie enjoyed the training, telling us,
It’s great to be able to take control of content ourselves instead of having to pay a developer for every little change! It’s been a very steep learning curve for some of us, but we’re delighted to be able to run this website between us, knowing that WestCoastCo. are there to save the day if we break something!
It’s easy to see why a church would opt for a marketing company which focuses on values. Community is very important to WestCoastCo., as you’ll have seen from our work with schools, local festivals and community hot-spots. As a rural benefice these churches are all about serving their wider community, and the collaboration between the three churches perfectly matches our “collaboration, not competition” ethos.
We’ll be catching up with DQOW Benefice again over the summer for a full case study and a look at how they’ve benefited from their online presence, so stay tuned!
